Starting in one of the toughest markets in Colombia wasn't an accident. It was a decision, and the best operational school we could have had.
A technology company usually gets the same advice: start where there's money, digital maturity and clients who already know what they want. Start in Bogotá, in Medellín.
Dacuit started in Riohacha, La Guajira. Not for lack of options, by choice.
La Guajira is one of the most demanding environments to build a business in Colombia: low digital maturity, tight liquidity, a complicated socioeconomic context. For many, a list of reasons not to operate here.
For us it was the opposite. A market where nobody buys technology "just because" forces you to understand the real pain before proposing a single tool. Here a business doesn't invest in a system because it's trendy; it invests when that system clearly gives back money, time or control. That took the temptation to sell hot air off the table from day one.
When you work with a construction firm, a restaurant or a hotel in Riohacha, you don't read operational chaos in a report. You see it: the order written down in a chat, the quote built by hand over three days, the owner who can't step away without something breaking.
Operating on this ground gave us something no imported playbook gives: understanding, from the inside, how an SMB in the Colombian Caribbean really works. Not assuming it. Knowing it.
There's a hidden advantage in starting with the hard part. A system designed for an operation with unreliable connectivity, teams that aren't digital natives and tight margins is a robust system. It doesn't depend on ideal conditions.
If it works in La Guajira, it works in Valledupar, in Santa Marta, in Barranquilla, and beyond. The reverse isn't true: a system designed for a comfortable environment rarely survives the ground.
Starting here doesn't mean staying only here. It means every system we build passed through the toughest test first. Riohacha and La Guajira are the base; the method was designed to scale from it, not despite it.
We don't copy Silicon Valley. We design for the ground we stand on, and it turns out that ground is an excellent place to learn to build something that holds up.
